Because let’s be honest… if we get cake on our birthday, our dogs absolutely should too!

Whether you’re celebrating a puppy’s first birthday or another glorious year with your senior sidekick, this dog-friendly birthday cake recipe is a simple, wholesome way to make their day extra special.

This recipe is made with dog-safe ingredients and is gentle on sensitive tummies -  perfect for birthday celebrations without the guilt.

Why Bake a Cake for Your Dog’s Birthday?

Celebrating dog birthdays has become a much-loved tradition — and for good reason. Making your own dog birthday cake means:

  • You control exactly what goes into it
  • It’s kinder on sensitive tummies
  • It feels thoughtful, personal and fun

Plus, let’s be honest… dogs absolutely know when it’s their day 🎉

Dog Birthday Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 120g wholemeal flour (or plain flour)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 free-range egg
  • 60g unsweetened peanut butter (Always check it’s xylitol (E967) free— essential for dog safety)
  • 80ml water
  • 2 tbsp rapeseed oil or olive oil
  • Optional dog-friendly topping such as dog treats
  • 3 tbsp plain Greek yoghurt (no sugar or sweeteners)
  • A handful of your dog’s favourite natural treats for decoration

How to Make a Dog Birthday Cake

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan / Gas Mark 4)
  2. Mix the flour and baking powder in a bowl
  3. Add the egg, peanut butter, oil and water
  4. Stir until you have a thick, spoonable batter
  5. Spoon into a lightly greased small cake tin
  6. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until firm and lightly golden
  7. Allow to cool completely before serving

💡 Tip: Always let the cake cool fully — warm cake can upset dogs’ stomachs.

Decorating Your Dog’s Birthday Cake

Once cooled, spread a thin layer of Greek yoghurt on top and decorate with dog treats or dog biscuit crumbs. Keep it simple — dogs care far more about taste than presentation (even if the photos say otherwise 😉).

Turn It Into a Proper Dog Birthday Celebration

A homemade cake is the perfect centrepiece for a birthday celebration, and if you want to make the day extra special, pairing it with a Dewkes Dog Treat gift box is a lovely finishing touch.

Our gift boxes are packed with natural, dog-approved treats, making them ideal for birthdays, gotcha days or as a thoughtful gift for another dog lover.

Cake and treats? That’s a birthday your dog will remember.

Important Safety Notes

  • Never use chocolate, raisins, grapes or artificial sweeteners
  • Always double-check peanut butter ingredients
  • Serve in moderation - birthday cake is a treat, not a meal
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, or frozen in slices for later.

Happy Birthday to Your Very Good Dog

Whether your dog is turning one or eleven, this easy dog birthday cake recipe is a simple way to celebrate everything that makes them so special. Because dogs aren’t just pets — they’re family.
